“Christ came to earth in the image of man so that man might leave the earth in the image of Christ.”
“Christ came to earth in the image of man so that man might leave the earth in the image of Christ.”
Elevating ourselves above God is a natural move for mankind. We seek his throne and assume his position, convincing ourselves that we’re better suited for the job. We crave the credit due our Creator and count ourselves worthy to counsel him. By God’s grace, he rescues many of us from our foolish rebellion as he draws us to Jesus Christ in repentance and faith and freely and fully forgives us. From that moment, we enter into the beautifully brutal lifelong process of stepping down from that throne for good. Slowly Shrinking is about that descent.
Taking our rightful place before God is often a very slow, two-steps-forward-one-step-back kind of journey. This is the Lord intimately at work inside of us, performing a type of spiritual heart surgery. In spite of the constant war between the flesh and the Spirit, believers are being conformed to the image of Jesus, one degree of glory at a time (2 Corinthians 3:18).
This transformation involves the ever-increasing realization that we were never the point of it all, nor will we ever be. Instead, we become more and more aware of the fact that from him, through him, and to him are all things (Romans 11:36), with Christ as the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13). It’s all about him. He eclipses everything else.
Slowly Shrinking aims to capture this long trek down the narrow road and joyfully declares, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
